This photo was taken during my last week in Northern Ireland. The view is through a mail slot, looking in the door of a flat, which was being torn down to rebuild a new multi-unit apartment building. I found the view from the mail slot to be the most fascinating picture. The front door was all that remained on the outside of the building. This door showed weather, abuse, and abandonment. The view through the slot spoke of the broken stories of the former tenants. If you looked into the heap longer you would see the former walls, floors, ceiling, and unwanted furniture waiting to be hauled off. It was like story books torn apart and thrown into a pile. I wondered who lived there, how long had it been since anyone had, and what went on in this place years before. The abandoned property caught my eye and sparked curiosity, which I still cannot fully comprehend. Most people would walk by and not look twice. I cannot stop looking. It makes me think about how often we are willing to throw away the old things that we do not need anymore, the people who we find it easier to just walk away from or we trade in what we have for something new and fresh. How much more do we need to consume and buy before we start cherishing what we already have? It is something that I don't think I will ever understand fully, which is why I am captivated by this image.
